You are all certainly entitled to your opinion as I am, as well, but surely neither of us can deny the importance and significance of that legendary bout between Italy and West Germany in 1970.

This World Cup Semi-final went down in the Azteca Stadium of Mexico City on June 17, 1970. The end result was Italy’s undisputed victory over the West Germany team, but no one remembers the score. What everyone remembers is the brilliant shows of sportsmanship and skill on the field as two teams, historical rivals, bitterly battled and raged across the field for supremacy. Sure, the first hour and a half of the game seemed pretty ordinary, but what few fail to take into account is the half hour of extra time that went into the game and carried it on into a nail biting tie breaker situation. In the end, however, Italy scored the winning goal with only nine minutes left on the clock solidifying their victory and the game’s place in history.

The final is in Rio and everyone thinks that Brazil is going to come up with the team to shock everyone and win the competition. However, it is not going to be easy for them. Ever since the great team of Ronaldo, Romario, Rivaldo, Roberto Carlos, Cafu and Ronaldinho, Brazil have been struggling a bit. Their younger players have taken time to come through and 2014 might be too soon for them.

Three teams that could shock Brazil and win in 2014 are Uruguay, Spain and the Netherlands. Spain won last time and are the favorites in many people’s eyes. The question is how long can they keep sustaining their success before their levels drop. The likes of Xavi and Puyol will be 34 and 35 in 2014, will they be too old to still pull the strings for Spain? Uruguay were 3rd last time and won the Copa America, so they are on a high and the likes of Suarez and Forlan will be looking for more international glory. But do not count out last time’s finalists Netherlands who will be spearheaded by the likes of Van Persie, Kuyt and Wesley Sneijder as they look to finally win a World Cup.

The great thing about Donovan is that he is versatile. He can play in any number of positions and he does that so well for his country. He has played as the main striker or as someone else’s strike partner. He has also played as a second striker and as a left or right attacking midfielder.

This versatility means that Donovan can play anywhere for this club side and for the United States and still be the dominant player. She won the award last year as well, when she stood with Lionel Messi who won his award for the men’s game.

Marta is a special talent. She can play up front or just behind one or two strikers. She is a typical Brazilian player in the sense that she has flashes of brilliance and a natural talent that cannot be taught. It was a decision that had been coming for a long time, because he was struggling to motivate his team and they were not making the progress people wanted. After a good World Cup they seemed to stagnate and fall back and they were poor in the Gold Cup. Mexico were 2-0 down but beat them 4-2 and Bob Bradley had no answers. That made people question whether he was the right man for the job.

He has been replaced by Jurgen Klinnsman and the question everyone asks is, what will he do? He was good with Germany but awful with Bayern Munich. He has lived in LA all his life but what does he know about US Soccer? The fact is, we need to give him a chance. He was a great player and could be a great coach as well. He has an attacking mentality and that will be appreciated by the fans as they look to their team to score goals and to be fun to watch. However, he will need to learn his players inside out and understand the staff he is dealing with. His first game was a 1-0 loss to Costa Rica, so he will need to get the team improving fast.
